Inspired by Kottke’s post which in turn was inspired by the Onion’s AV Club…
As a kid, I’m embrassed to say, that besides the eggregious original Star Wars trilogy rewatches, the movie that probably clocked the highest count is Grease. What can I say? I loved that greaser look and I wanted to marry Oliva Newton-John’s Sandy. As a teenager I probably watched Purple Rain way more times than I should have, but John Cusak’s A Sure Thing came in a close second. In college I was obsessed with all thing Tarantino. The Reservoir Dogs copy on VHS I had must have been viewed 20+ times, and I saw Pulp Fiction in the theater 4 times, and who knows how many times at home.
More recently, Fight Club practically became my video bible in late 2001. During the lowest point in my adult life, I was facing time for an extreme DUI and I was living in a house full of drug addicts, all I owned was an old TV, a DVD player, and that DVD. I watched it at least 100 times. I watched all the commentary tracks, all the special features, everything. Tyler Durden saved my life. I started reading Chuck Palahniuk, and haven’t looked back since.
After Fight Club, I think Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, probably clocks in as the second most rewatched movie of recent years. I defy you to find a more perfect adaptation of a literary work. And the fact that I’m also obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson probably has a little to do with the rewatch count. I’ve also enjoyed Vince Vaughn’s work in Old School and Wedding Crashers several times as well.
