This is a shot of a typical street in my Uncle’s home city, Oviedo. The cute little lady walking down the street is my Aunt. Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, which was the only part of Spain that wasn’t conquered by the Moors. A fact that is still highly regarded by the average Asturiano, so much so, that they call Asturias “the real Spain” since it was never “tainted by scourge of Islam.”
In the background is the city’s cathedral, which is home to The Sudarium of Oviedo, which is a cloth that was supposedly wrapped around Christ’s head at the time of his burial. It’s not as well know as the Shroud of Turin, but it’s actual history is a easier to authenticate. You can’t actually see the Sudarium, because they only bring it out once a year for three days, and I missed it by like a week. But they have a full-size photograph of it hanging behind the medieval box it’s held in, and if you squint hard enough, you can actually see the outline of Christ’s face. Creepy.
